Springtime concert at Abney Court Care Home

Pupils in Year 6 at Heaton Mersey based independent school Stella Maris, wowed residents and staff at CareUK’s Abney Court Residential Home with a Spring music and dance concert.

The pupils designed and planned the showcase themselves. At the forefront of their mind was variety to ensure there was something for everyone. The concert encompassed tap, poetry, readings, singing and instrument playing.

Headteacher Norah Johnson commented “The children get such joy out of planning, rehearsing and performing for the residents. It is lovely to see the happiness it brings to the people who live at the home. At Stella Maris, we teach our children traditional values based around caring and sharing. Respecting others and having time for people are important qualities that the children can put into practice when at Abney Court. In addition, with dementia becoming more prevalent in society it is important that we educate the young that those living with dementia still enjoy many of the things that they have always enjoyed. Our link up with Abney Court has allowed us to share something different with our community and I think the pupils get as much out of it as the audience do.”

Tracy Mitchell, the home manager of Abney Court agrees “Many of our residents receive regular visitors but it is always particularly special when young people visit. At Abney Court, we offer a wide range of activities to suit all tastes but the Stella Maris performances have proved popular with all!”.

The Iron Man

Pupils in Years 3 and 4 have been busy constructing 'The Iron Man' as part of their class project focusing on the famous Ted Hughes book.

They have used cardboard and other household items to build a life size model of the Iron Man, complete with lighting up eyes!

Class teacher Mr Brown commented "The children really enjoy studying this book and have enjoyed reading it aloud in class. After completing some lovely chalk drawings of the Iron Man we decided to get a little more ambitious and have a go at building him! The children are delighted with the end result."
